Songwriting Competition

Hello Friends!  We want this year’s song-writing competition to be the biggest and best yet, to match the international, star-studded lineup at the 20th and final Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival.

The song-writing competition has been a popular, well-attended event, both inspired and inspiring. We have heard some wonderful songs and have given the talented winners encouragement, a spot on the main stage, and, of course, bragging rights. And we hope we have inspired and encouraged many others as well. This will be the last chance to compete and show off your creative talents to like-minded members of the sea-music community. Come and share your maritime songs. We would love to see a full lineup of competitors, and hope to see you at Gas Light, on Saturday Sept 28th. from 11:30 to 1:30

The rules are:

1. The song must have a maritime theme.

2. A song must be performed by the songwriter, from memory, either a capella or with self-provided acoustic instrumental accompaniment. If the song was co-written, the performer must be one of the songwriters.

3. Enter by emailing your name and address and the song’s title to info@pmffest.org. You will receive an email reply.

4. Bring a copy of your lyrics to the venue on the day.

5. Because our time is strictly limited, the competition will be limited to the first 15 entrants. Each entrant will have a maximum of eight minutes. If slots are available on the day of the competition, walk-in competitors will be welcome. (Bring a copy of your lyrics.)

6. Entries will be judged on maritime themed lyrics, originality, tune, and overall presentation.

7. The winner will be invited to sing the song at the Saturday evening concert.
