Dashing Wave was not the fastest, but was one of the most durable clipper ships built in 1853 in the Fernald & Pettigrew shipyard, Portsmouth, NH. She was a working vessel for more than 66 years and served on the route between the East Coast and San Francisco, then was used as a barge for the Libby Canning Co. in Alaska and was wrecked in 1920 on Vancouver Island.
Sea Serpent was built in Portsmouth, NH by George Raynes and launched in 1850. She was an extreme clipper that sailed in the San Francisco trade, the China trade, and the transatlantic lumber trade, and she was one of the longest lived clippers with a service life of over 36 years. Witch of the Wave was built by George Raynes at North Mill Pond, and he delivered it to Salem, MA in 1851. She sailed for 34 years as part of the California trade. The USS Ranger was a sloop-of-war, and she was the first ship in the Continental Navy. She was in active service in 1777–1780. Built at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard on Badger’s Island in Kittery, Maine, she is famed for the one-ship raiding campaign by Captain John Paul Jones, during naval operations of the American Revolutionary War. |
