I was born in mid-coast Maine, growing up on a working dairy farm. My parents always loved folksongs, and there was many a song party at the house with our friends and neighbors.
I’ve been a member of the sea music group Roll & Go since 1990 and we’ve producedthree CDs: Outward Bound, Rolling Down to Sailortown, and Lookout. Roll & Go has been featured several times at the Mystic Sea Music Festival. More information about Roll & Go can be accessed from our website: www.rollandgoseasongs.com
I have also released six CDs as a solo performer: Uncommon Sailor Songs, More Uncommon Sailor Songs, Old Sailor-Poets, Sailortown Days, Song from an Old Sea Chest, Never Turn a Blind Eye to the Storm, and Steamboat Days. I accompany my songs with the 5-string banjo or Anglo concertina. I have performed solo at festivals, folk clubs, coffee houses and house concerts from coast to coast in the States, in Canada, in the UK, and in Australia.
I have also co-edited The Complete Poetry of Cicely Fox Smith, as well as four songbooks. More information can be accessed at http://www.charlieipcar.com/
My wife and I now live in Richmond, Maine, a quiet river town some twenty miles up the Kennebec River from the coast. We share our household with our calico cat.
